Budgeting for Students: How I Manage Pocket Money Like a Pro

Let’s be real—budgeting sounds like something adults do with spreadsheets and scary bills. But honestly? If you’ve ever had to make pocket money stretch till the end of the month, you’ve already started budgeting (even if it didn’t go perfectly 😅).

I used to spend my money without thinking. Little things like snacks at school or random accessories would drain my wallet before I even realized what happened. But once I started saving up for my Kamoka bush school journey, I knew I needed to change.

✨ Here's what I did:

1. I Started Tracking Every Rand

I downloaded a free budgeting app and made it a habit to write down everything I spent—even R20 on chips. It made me see where my money was going and helped me cut back on things I didn’t really need.

2. The “3 Jar” Rule

I split my money into 3 categories:

  • Save: Long-term stuff (like gear for Kamoka or future goals).

  • Spend: Fun things I want now, but only if I can afford them.

  • Give: Even if it’s small, I keep a bit aside for gifting or helping someone else.

3. No Impulse Buying

This one was HARD. I used to get excited and buy things quickly. But now, I wait a few days. Funny thing is—I usually don’t want it anymore. That’s how I saved R700 on my hiking bag just by being patient!

4. I Set Weekly Limits

I give myself a max to spend each week. It’s like a mini challenge to stay under it. Sometimes I win, sometimes I don’t—but I always learn something.

5. I Make Saving Fun

I treat saving like a game. I even named my savings goals—like “Kamoka Queen” or “Dream Bag.” Watching the progress feels really good.

🌱 Final Thought:

Budgeting doesn’t mean never spending money—it just means spending it smart. I still get the things I love, but I also feel proud knowing I’m in control of my money.

If I can do it, you can too. Start small, stay consistent, and celebrate the wins—even the tiny ones!
